I got this from BOTM because it sounded like the summery, toxic friendship chaos of You're Invited.
And to an extent it was. But not nearly as good for me.
First off, I had to switch to the audio pretty quickly because I couldn't really tell the difference between POVs. The full cast was really necessary for me.
Then, and this is not the book's fault, but the ending was so glaringly obvious to me the second we knew Poppy had a sister. I think it's because I had read a book recently that had a bullied girl's sister avenge her after her suicide. So, I kind of figured where we were going.
But it was a fun ride. I guessed the most of the secrets the women were hiding (Tanya's drug problem, Chloe sleeping with Annabel's husband, Esther's abusive boyfriend) but not others (Annabel's kleptomania). I also took a while to put together that if Robin thought Annabel was the bride, Annabel was the one left standing in the opening.
The ending, with Wendy killing all the women but letting Annabel take the fall was great (my god, they deserved it) but again...SO similar to another book I read not that long ago.
I'm glad they got their comeuppance. It was hilarious when Annabel, the "smart" one was like "hmmmm, but who could look like Poppy and have seen her journal and know what happened?" knowing full well Wendy existed.
The bullying was horrific. Poor Poppy. Yay avenging sister.
Just a pretty middle of the road thriller.
I would've been happier if Robin was Poppy's secret fiance and helping her. Because then Poppy would be alive and vengeful bisexuals are fun.
Edit: I just looked at my review of The Girls Are All So Nice Here and...Poppy is literally the avenging sister's name lol

got this from book of the month & it was actually amazing. no plot twist was what it seemed.
Well this one had a surprising yet slightly predictable ending. Bullying, old friendships and revenge are the name of the game. There was a dose of medicine handed out to all. Shocking and surprising yet expected and predictable express how I felt reading this book.
This was one of those books that you’re unsure about at first, and then you read the second half of it in one sitting. I think overall this was a great read, my only reason for 4 stars was because in the beginning it’s a little much to have so many perspectives. I think we could’ve had a 3rd person narrator for Chloe, Esther, Tanya, and Annabel, until things start to pick up and then it would be useful to have everyone’s POV. But other than that, this has a good twist and it’s definitely a different idea. You really feel for Poppy and I think the diary entries were a huge part to why the book was so good. Highly recommend
It delivered as promised & I didn’t want to put it down. Loved the girl drama but there was a certain level of predictability. It did have a few surprises though!
dark
mysterious
medium-paced
Moderate: Suicide
So many twists in this one including a final one that I did not see coming at all but really elevated this book to another level. This is a fantastic debut and is one that I just could not put down. It's a story of revenge and what I liked is that all the characters are terrible so you're rooting for them to get what's coming to them. Which makes it all the more delicious when they do. I had a lot of fun reading this and it reminded me of other thrillers I've read but it was different enough to make it feel unique. And I guess there's a part of me that liked this because I was the kid that was bullied in school and believe me, there were many years where I dreamed about getting back at the people who tormented me. So I took great pleasure in watching the bullies get their comeuppance. I was here for the petty! Whatever Sian Gilbert has in store for us next, I will be reading. Hopefully it will be as compelling and fun as this one was.
This was a gripping book with a host of unlikable characters, but as the story went on the mystery became more and more predictable, and in the end the big reveal wasn’t all that surprising because the cast of characters was so small.
This was an easy read. At times I was bored and felt the story was just being drug out but then the TWIST was great. Super sad story about the impacts of bullying and why it’s important to be kind to people
The writing was well done and the premise was interesting but I didn’t get much out of the revenge plot. I wanted to see the culprit(s) suffer but that portion of the story was rushed. There was never any remorse. It just wasn’t satisfying. And then the book ended. Meh.
