I was sad to finish this book since it was so good! Kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

The fourth book in the Detective Kaga series. Not sure if it’s the final one. Although this has brought me out of a massive reading slump (sort of), I thought it was just alright.

In this one, Kaga gets involved in a case that involves two seemingly unconnected  mysterious deaths. There follows a typical Higashino style police procedural, which at times in this book appears incredibly far-fetched! I can only deduce that Japan has a humongous police force with plenty of time on their hands to follow up on every lead however improbable! The narrative has a broad scope - from the world of theatre to lowly labourers in high profile Nuclear power plants.  Still, Higashino does manage to bring the narrative together somewhat believably in the end.

I wasn’t particularly invested in the story and found the main protagonist Hiromi Asai unlikeable. I did like Kaga’s cousin and colleague Matsumiya and the rest of the police team. Kaga was his usual unflappable self, a touch aloof and superior in manner , if intelligent and decisive. For a large part of the book, I found the investigation very far-fetched although Higashino made it sound probable!

All in all, a just decent read that did manage to bring me out of my reading slump somewhat without really rekindling the reading habit 🤷🏼‍♀️ Average read.

The reveal seemed rushed out, but other than that it was such a delightful experience.

It was a fun murder mystery but I found the writing to be choppy - this was likely do to the translation.
