This short story has been a pleasant surprise. For a work of 100 or so pages, it was incredibly plot heavy, and kept you hooked without getting excessively tense. None of the characters were likeable, strictly speaking, but each of them was given enough depth to make the reader care about everyone – from the eponymous dog, to the scientist, to the cook.
It's perfectly entertaining without any knowledge of the historical background. But it's an ironic satire – an admirably witty and (at times) subtle one – of the NEP years of Soviet Communism in Moscow, so an understanding of the historical setting adds another level of enjoyment to the reading.
