Check trigger warmings!

This was fucked up. I love super dark romances and I know most of the books I read stretch credibility and I’m okay with that. But the fact that this dude is suffering intense trauma from being repeatedly raped by his mother (and eventually killing her as a 7 year old), it seems really bizarre that he would find out the woman has DID from a year of captivity and rape and beatings at the hands of who knows how many men that he would be fixated on having sex with her…almost instantly. The darkness didn’t bother me but he did.

Trauma and a DID diagnosis

Check your triggers as this one is full of them.

This book was beautifully written to show so many traumas and their responses. Discovering each of the personalities was interesting and absolutely heartbreaking.

Both main characters have been through a lot and have a lot of trauma to deal with. Caleb comes in and saves the FMC from her captor. This dubs him her savior. However, he very quickly realizes there is a split in personalities. He is quick to get her help because he is drawn to her and she helps quiet his own demons.

This is a story of trauma and love. This is sacrifice and understanding. This is healing and knowing when you need more help.

this book was an incredibly tough read. i consider myself pretty stable when it comes to triggering media and have never  felt the need to disengage because of upsetting content, but this one almost got me. i felt so disgusted at times, but i also couldn’t help but feel like i needed to see it through. i think like a lot people, i have a very naive view of DID and the effects of severe sexual trauma on the psyche, and i do believe this book helped widen my worldview in that regard.
i especially respected that the author did not try to “love away” the fmc’s mental state and showed her getting psychiatric help in the end.
this was a really hard one, but i think a really important one as well.

The biggest piece of advice I have for anyone considering this book is to be completely honest with yourself about if you can handle the content of this book before reading it. The author's note and trigger warnings are thorough, so be sure to review and sit with them before reading.

Having said that, this book will be in my top 10 of all time. It is that tragically beautiful and deeply profound. If you have ever engaged with someone with DID or have any interest in the psychology of DID, this book will be an incredibly impactful journey for you. If you have ever experienced this specific trauma (see warnings) or know someone who has, this book will rip your heart wide open, but it is so worth it. I promise. I am grateful I had the opportunity to finish it in one day and my family gave me the space and time to really sit with it. You will need tissues and time to process...but you won't regret it.

Please be sure you know what you are diving into with this book. This book is dark and covers some tough mental health issues. Your mental health is very important!

This book was absolutely amazing to read. The way the mental health issues are covered with so much depth, emotions, and vivid accounts is truly amazing. You will find yourself in a love/hate relationship with this story. You will love the way you are drawn in, hooked from beginning to end, and fill with so much detail. You will find the hate part come in because you feel for characters and all they have been through and how difficult Thor lives are living with these. Mental illness.

I am still finding myself looking back at all of the information in this book and left in complete shock.
