I enjoyed reading this memoir more than I thought I would. It was a very quick read for me and I enjoyed reading about all of the patients Michele saw in the ER. She seems to be a very compassionate doctor and wants to do what is best for her patients.

This was an absolutely stunning memoir. It was beautifully written, so poignant, and all of the patient stories made me feel a lot of things. Incredible read and lovely prose. Michele is a badass.

For being a helper/healer, I found her language used about the people she'd see and work with rude and not person-centered.

Ehhhh..... this book did too much at once (her family relationship, her romantic relationships, spirituality and self help, medical cases) and nothing felt like it went deep enough. And given confidentiality issues, she had to reinvent the stories and conversations at her job, and they felt artificial.

I can’t believe I waited so long to read this – it’s so good. It’s hard to read and gut wrenching at times. I found myself tearing up more than laughing because it’s so real. The author is an ER doctor who explores what it means to practice medicine, experience racism and sexism in the workplace and the world, and find her own way spiritually.

She explores forgiveness for her abusive father, seeking deeper to find healing in the cases she works with, and digging deeper with a patient even though your shift is over in 15 minutes.

It’s heartbreaking and lovely and a beautiful read! So glad a friend and I are discussing it in a few weeks – I’ve got a lot of things to talk about!

Truly reflective and delightful to get a inside look into the author's experiences! Not only did she tell us her experiences throughout her career but she gave you a inside look on how to overcome and cope in the best way. My career field is veterinary medicine and being African American, I was able to really connect to her story. It gave me confidence to keep pushing through my day to day life. Awesome read! Thank you Dr. Harper!

Powerful, moving memoir

This is one of those books that I checked out from the library and that I will need to purchase for myself. Maybe it’s because my mom was an ER nurse when I was a kid and I have vivid memories of the stories she would bring home. The writing and reflecting make this memoir a joy to read and the author tells stories of her life and of her patients that offer us such insight into humanity.
