Part 1

It took me quite some time to fall for either of the heroes of this novel. It was almost too simple and straightforward of a plot for me. Yet, Quinn recovered remarkably with her ending, twisting up everything to deliver her customarily satisfying conclusions.

The plot was juicy!!! Jack and Grace make a cute couple. And I like heroes like Jack, so usually don’t take themselves too seriously (even though his humor was a defense mechanism). Still, I kind of wish they didn’t fall for each other so quickly, and the book spent a bit more time on them getting to know each other.

This, while an enjoyable book, I do not think is quite up to the quality of the Bridgertons. It seemed to me as if it continued on for some time with no real direction, and in actuality, not very much happened in the book. It kept making you feel that something big was about to happen, but in the end, very little did that could not have been resolved in twenty pages instead of more than 300. I just didn't feel the tension. Jack became duke, he overcame Grace's worries by basically just saying "I don't care, I'm just going to marry her anyway..." The end just felt rather cheap. The chemistry between the two main characters was not terribly strong - I just didn't feel it . That said, I did LIKE both of the main characters - although I felt that Jack became almost a caricature of himself by the end. On the other hand, I did very much like Thomas, the current duke, and I look forward to reading more about him in the second novel of this series. Not a bad book, and certainly worth reading, but not up to Quinn's normal quality.

I was sick and this was available at the digital library. I actually liked it better than the other two books I've read of Ms. Quinn's. The premise was admittedly far-fetched, but the characters were likeable and imperfect and the dialog was funny and quick. I didn't understand Thomas's character at all (
Spoiler Did he love Grace? Did he love Amelia? Why was he dragging his feet about marriage? Why was he so weird en route to Ireland?
), but that was a pretty minor complaint.

Awalnya agak membosankan. Terutama sikap Dowager yang nyebelin banget. Trus rahasia Jack soal Arthur jg sengaja disimpan sampai mau habis br dibeberkan. Pantesan aja dia ga mau jd duke.
Tp menjelang akhir, ceritanya makin seru. Dan harus baca buku keduanya biar lengkap, penasaran sama kisahnya Amelia dan Thomas

I enjoyed this book. It was a good length. The characters were engaging while not being annoying. Basically all the characters (even the mean one) had some redeeming qualities and seemed to care about the others. In this story, we're introduced to Jack, who had been a highwayman, who is drawn into the drama/mystery of whether he is in fact a Duke by his mysterious heritage.

It wasn't a big mystery, the book was more about what was going to happen to the characters afterward. I enjoyed Jack, Grace and all the other characters, even the Dowager Duchess had her moments. Standard good Julia Quinn book. The epilogue was a waste of time though.
