I didn’t think this would be better than Harlem Shuffle but it was! It took all of the elements that made that great and made them even better!

This is so upsetting…..I keep reading the second book in a series only to find out it’s part of a series after I finish it…….. struggled thru the beginning (surprise surprise it was difficult to catch on to what was happening) but I really liked it by the end

Can people just write #2?? Or sequel on the cover?? If it’s a SEQUEL???? I’m begging you???

The writing and construction of this book is fantastic, with the craft of writing on clear display. However, I just got bored. I was forgetting what was happening, who it was happening to, and why I should care. Disappointing but maybe could be a good tv show?

a cynical but often funny look at the mean streets of Harlem in the 70s... for lovers of crime fiction and New York

I love Colson Whitehead's writing and I continued to enjoy the atmosphere and setting that was built so wonderfully in the first book. But I found this one harder to get into. There were a lot of references to other characters and events (many but I don't think all from the previous book) which I found distracting to try to follow. And I liked the main character less this time, particularly related to his relationship with his wife. Let me say again though, the writing is great.

I have loved two other Colson Whitehead books and I wanted to like this book, but it was nearly a DNF for me. The pace went from super fast to slow to fast again, and the moments of plot were outnumbered by the rehashing of the same world building concepts over and over (how the tenements get burned out for insurance scams or crooked politicians). It’s just too inconsistent and heavy handed for my taste.
