Still good but not as great as the first one. I grew up in Manhattan in the 1970s so it was a little bit painful to read about how the city was going downhill and how politicians were scamming off the city's misfortunes, the danger and violence that was like a fog everywhere, not just Harlem. I would have liked it better if we'd stayed closer to Carney, the protagonist, as we did in the first book.

A snappy quick read. I loved how Whitehead used the crime genre to discuss race, class, and upward mobility. It was also hilarious in very surprising ways.

What would you do to get tickets for your daughter to the sold-out Jackson 5 concert? For Carney, it ends up being more than he bargains for. Great audiobook!

Audiobook
I love the world he’s created and the characters are compelling. Truthfully I don’t know if I would have liked it as much in print but the actor on the audiobook is great. I can’t wait for the third part of the trilogy.
