Sequel to "Harlem Shuffle" - think it's the better of the two so far.

Full disclosure: I read the first Ray Carney book (Harlem Shuffle) last year and didn't realize this was its sequel. I'm not sure I'd have sought it out had I known their connection ahead of time. Harlem Shuffle and Crook Manifesto are extremely similar, so if you want more of the same, read it.

I'm not sure I wanted more of the same, since the writing style is confusing and can be unfocused sometimes. The transitions from character to character and the jumps in time are pretty jarring, and like its predecessor Crook Manifesto was long and difficult to follow. The characters were certainly likeable and the premise is great; but the style is not for me.

A fun and gritty romp through 1970s Harlem. A furniture store owner with one foot in the criminal underworld makes for a great main character - calm, steady, in over his head, and endearingly moral.
