DNF at 70%. Maybe it’s the way the parts were broken into relatively discreet stories, but part 3 started and I just found that I didn’t care to read more. Pepper in part 2 was worth it, though.

In this sequel to Harlem Shuffle, Whitehead has again surrounded his hero, furniture store owner and sometimes fence, Ray Carney with a cast of crooks and gangsters, dirty cops and filthy politicians, a bunch of street characters, and a guy named Pepper. Crook Manifesto is three stories all set in 1970s Harlem about Carney attempting to go clean, failing, and getting up to all sorts of misadventures.

Colson Whitehead is a magician of a writer. Very smooth, very, very cool. Much like Harlem Shuffle, I read this so quickly I'm not sure how much I absorbed, I just know I was having a blast reading it.
