You just couldn't get into it, despite it being a good book.

Oh how I wanted to love this book. I tried, I really did. Colson Whitehead can write a book!! His descriptions bring back the 70's and I can feel the grit and grime in every chapter. However, this story was so hard to follow for me. I loved Harlem Shuffle and just knew that I would love this one too. But really it is just a strong like for me.

Thank you to Libro.fm, Doubleday Books and Colson Whitehead for the gifted copies of this book, in exchange for my honest review.

Not as good as Harlem Shuffle, but still a good read. This book is less Carney-focused than the first, and Pepper seems to be more of a protagonist in this book. This book is an interesting take on the decline of NYC and the subsequent "white flight" that occurred during the time. There was more humor in the first book, and that's understandable; the 70s was a time of a seedier, darker New York.
I kinda wish that Oakes had a better exit. Being taken out by a nutjob was so unsatisfying. I wanted his corruption to be revealed, but I can understand why Whitehead didn't want to go that route.
