This was lacking any kind of heart or substance. It was like: the two kids went here, now the emerald is with these different fantasy creatures, so let's go there, oh, now a different creature has it, let's go there. It just felt like the author wanted these kids to have an "adventure" without putting any real thought into it at all. Maybe early readers would enjoy it, but I think kids deserve more.

Perfect start to a new children’s collection.

To add to my knowledge of early readers.
The story is simple and gentle but I need to work up my own definitions of what make good early readers before I van really evaluate this.
Largely enjoyable but quite gender normative as these tend to be.

As a first chapter book it's written well. Exciting and satisfying. About friendship.

Sadly, not a fan. I thought the prince was a bit of a brat. :( I didn’t love the father’s choices and the dynamics between him and everyone. I felt icky about the whole thing. In the end there is a message of friendship, but it’s clouded with (in my opinion) toxicity. I want more in kids books and better messaging!

My 5 year old daughter loves these as her first chapter book series. We have read every one and she is anxiously awaiting the next title to be released. They aren’t really my favorite thing to read aloud as they seem incredibly dull, but my daughter prefers that kind of thing as more thrilling stories can give her a bit of anxiety and nightmares.
