even though i like watching true crime stuff, I've never read a true crime book but this was genuinely one of the best books i have read in a while. it had me feeling disgusted most of the time but the writing was so good i just couldn’t put it down. will be thinking about it for a long time

Wow. This book is so complicated and multi-faceted and the author does an amazing job of taking you through her complex feelings of this case as she peels the onion back on the childhood of the accused and her own childhood trauma. The two become intertwined as the process unfolds, and she is brutally honest with her thoughts and feelings throughout the process.

This was one of the most difficult books to get through based on content that I have recently read. The story centers on repeated instances of childhood abuse and trauma. I went into the book thinking it would have more theoretical law concepts woven into the true crime and memoir elements, but the legals aspects were minimal. While there certainly were important topics covered, it was such a tough read to get through that I had to carefully chose when I would read the book.

The way this book is written tears you apart. Lesnevich definitely put her time and research into this book in a way that makes it clear the imprint the case left on her. The indepth research of the case overlaid with her own story was very well-done. Neither overpowered the other. Once I started this book, it was hard to put down.
