there were some powerful essays in this collection, full of insight and beautiful prose. as a whole, though, i felt it was a let down. there was a not inconsequential amount of repetition across the essays (e.g. hooks introducing the fact that she teaches at berea college, that she went to stanford, that she knows wendell berry) which made getting through it a real slog at times. i think hooks was let down by her editor as well - a weird amount of sentences with poor construction, typos, grammatical issues. they were common enough that it made reading... annoying? i had high hopes for this, but ultimately was mostly disappointed.

I love bell hooks but the failure to tighten up the repetition across essays makes the slim volume feel like a slog.
