I loved Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles and was very curious about this when I first heard about it. While the synopsis sounded interesting, it also sounded a bit cheesy (the casual use of the word villain had me disturbed for a good read). So with a bit of trepidation, I dove in. The intro did nothing for me but by the third chapter, I was hooked! I hated putting it down for even a short bit. Great characterization, and a very catching scenario that was guaranteed to lead to fun (for the reader) trouble! It reminded me a lot of a cross X-Men and The Incredibles. So if you like either of both of these, you might have a good time reading this. Fast paced and lots of small details. I am so eager to read the next book. I think so much needs to be tied to the tragedy of the early chapters that neither side knows the whole truth but we shall see. So much I need to know right now. I have questions on Nova's parents, Ace, Max and Adrian's mom and I want more details of how it all connects! BUt I love that I have these desires. Not often do I feel so invigorated after a book. And I have felt this way twice now!
2023- Audiobook. Still quite the tale. I needed my superhero fix and this is such a great way to get it! I liked that the audiobook had different narrators for Adrian vs Nova. It really helped bring it more to life. I wish the person who voiced Nova had a bit more of an edge, or bite to her voice. More anger toward the Renegades in her tone. It didn't quite hit with enough impact to make it believable. I enjoyed listening for the nuances for what she saw around other Renegades and in their headquarters, and then trying to imagine it as someone else, more neutral might.

This is a great hero/villain tale from Meyer. The Renegades are superheroes who have taken over after years of Anarchist (villains) rule. I really liked Nova and Sketch and hate that now I have to wait for the next book!
Summary: As champions of justice, the Renegades remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone, except the villains they once overthrew. Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance.

this premise -hero vs villain- has definitely been done before, but this story still managed to have moments that felt fresh. i enjoyed the view from the villain side and how quickly the line between hero and villain can blur. although i realize the irony of this statement, some of the superpowers just felt unbelievable. part of this may be because the supers genre is so overdone... it’s hard to come up with new, yet still convincing powers. a few that were just plan cool though, especially sketch’s power (though as an artist, i’m probably a touch biased). interested to see how the story develops in the next novel.
Loved it! Looking forward to continuing the series

No, no, no, no, no.
This book was all wrong.
I haven’t really gotten into the whole superhero movement, but I don’t think that really played that big of a role into why I didn’t like this book.
1. It was too long. At over 500 pages, I want a book that sucks me in, not a book that is painful to pick up and read.
2. I had a difficult time keeping track of all the characters and their superpowers.
3. I finished the book left with so many questions.
4. The characters weren’t that relatable. At least not like the characters of The Lunar Chronicles and Heartless.
5. Did I mention the book was too long?
