This is either my 2nd or 3rd read. This time with the annotated version of the book. I don’t know if the annotations helped clarification and I had to change how I read the book to read them. However great for a reread if you’ve read it before. Please do the study guide. It has Principles in the back which might be a better place to start before going at the main text. Great reading suggestions in the back.

The contextualization portion is very thorough (albeit somewhat dry), but the manifesto itself is obviously compelling.

Rating based on introduction and not actual manifesto. 80%+ is commentary on the (surprising to me) short manifesto by Marx. I found the commentary informative and it gave good backstory to what lead up to Marx’s writing.

Incredibly fun to read oh my god. Honestly, reading the communist manifesto this late into my critical theory education was probably for the best. It was nice to have the means to untangle how painfully brief it is.

Also Engels seems like a chill guy. I’d grab a beer with him.
