Thank you Net Galley and HQ for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was such fun to read. The Change follows three women in their late 40s who are sick of how they are treated by men and the world being full of misogyny. Jo, who is my favourite character in the book, runs a women’s only gym and is incredibly witty. Harriett is a botanist who has an ability with plants and used to work in a company full of men. Nessa can see the dead. One day, they find a girl dead on the side of the road. With children of their own, they vow to find who did this and punish them.

The Change is a feminist thriller exploring the power of women in menopause and the strength that they have. This does mention some quite serious topics, so I do suggest reading the content warnings before reading.

I would recommend this to fans of ‘The Power’ and anyone that enjoys women-strong thrillers. The fast-pace makes it enjoyable. One thing to note, however, is that the pace does slow down halfway through and at times it got a bit boring and for me personally there wasn’t enough action in these parts.

this was a ride.

but what a ride it was!

so many true moments how the world women love in and how horrible some things are but how nice some can be as well.

this book had a lot going on but it all worked and it was wonderful.

i loved how it’s written.
the characters are fantastic.
the story was horrifyingly realistic but so well done.

it all worked and i loved it.

This book was something' else...

Think feminist murder mystery + witchy elements + deeply descriptive so you feel like you are there

Things I enjoyed about this book:
- the feminist/pro-women vibes were STRONG. & I loved it.
- always here for witchy/magical realism vibes
- there were numerous twists and turns which really kept you on your toes

Things I struggled with:
- this book was slow; I would say the last 150 pages were by far the most exciting. While I love books that are deeply descriptive and have strong character development, it makes for a slow start, but nothing I wasn't able to push through.
- there were two characters with names that started with a C that I got mixed up regularly (idk why this was so hard for me but it was!)
- the behavior of men in this book makes you want to rage, which is the point of the book

CW: murder, sex trafficking, rape, assault, sexism

This book promised magic, mystery, and a feminist revenge fantasy, but really only delivered on the last one. The women had powers, but they were kind of vague. Nessa's ghost-seeing abilities were the most developed. Harriet was a caricature of a hedge witch, and Jo's powers were the least developed. She was strong and her hands got hot? Oook. There were ghosts, but they were just sort of there. There was a mystery, but it it wasn't investigated methodically with clues laid out - they just sort of stumbled across things. I did like how almost every woman in the book got a fleshed out backstory, and it was very cathartic to see all the disgusting men in their lives get what was coming to them. It was entertaining, but ultimately kind of a let down. I don't think the full potential of the premise was realized.
