Heartbreakingly beautiful. This book explores generational trauma within a family system that didn’t hold anything back. Highly recommend this book.

Heartbreaking story of generational trauma but despite that there is a glimmer of hope.

Fantastic book. I loved “The Break” and I loved this. Vermette’s characters will stay with me for a long time.

I enjoyed The Break and thought it was an incredible way to explore inter generational trauma. With her second book, Vermette has only gotten better. This was a captivating story, cleverly weaving three generations of narratives.

Another masterpiece by the brilliant Vermette. You really connect to each of the characters and feel invested in their stories, which are threaded in beautiful prose with histories and narratives that flow naturally and seamlessly. Beautiful follow up to The Break.

This was a really intriguing story structure, and I loved the views from all of the different women about their lives. I wasn’t ready for it to end!

One of those books that keeps you thinking about the characters after you finished it. Written from the perspective of four different characters that move the story forward while filling in details from the past.

Katherena Vermette has a way with words that help you feel the emotions of the characters she’s writing about. I love all the little connections of the characters in her book the Break and this book (definitely read the Break first).

I did find this book quite heavy, especially Margaret’s character. Throughout the story, you really start to understand how the actions of one family member really affects the others, and it definitely creates a clear picture of generational trauma and it’s lasting effects. I wish there was a little bit more detail into why Margaret carried so much hate (you do get the general idea but I did feel like her story kind of just ends without any type of resolution…just anger). I also really wanted more for Phoenix’s character. Maybe that’s just my desire to have some hopefulness and that being a bit unrealistic as not everyone in real life finds hope to hold on to.

But generally I felt the story was well written, it was captivating (though not quite like the Break) and made the reader become invested in the characters.
