Scrapes a four. Very violent and the end was confusing but I still want to know what happens next.

To tell the truth I had a hard time getting into this book. It had been awhile since I had read book one and managed to miss book two and the events at the start of the book, including Duncan Reever's betrayal of the League ships and his behavior as a member of the Hsktskt Federation was very hard for me to read. But I set this aside for a few weeks and came back to it and ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

Not sure if I want to go back and read book two but I have book four here so may continue the series.

The series is amazing so far, but I'm pissed at the turn things have taken. I expect I'll be perpetually irritated with what happened to Kao.

I really think the author's started to paint herself into a corner with Cherijo; everything that's proposed to her, she rejects out of hand, without any reference to reason, logic, or even facts. It's really getting frustrating and obnoxious, since I'm sure there are facts there (like Duncan's logic behind bringing her on the ship, etc) that she's not even considering. A doctor like this would take one look at a person with a stomach ache, diagnose gastroenteritis, and never take a look at it again because additional facts might disturb her conclusions, which would make her dangerous. The rest of the characters are beginning to resemble caracatures, as well. Frustrating.

I really wanted to like this series - a medical doctor in space, encountering all sorts of species, etc. sounded like it'd be engaging and fun. And the first one was. But the main character lacks depth and I can't stand Reever. The ongoing 'victim/martyr' portrayal grates on my nerves. I'll be looking for a different space series with a female lead -- this one doesn't do it for me.
