While I have loved the other books in this series, I found Annetta annoying in this one and wanted more of Yeppa. I think maybe because Yeppa was on leave and took a different role in this story/case, we didn’t really get as much of him.

I did like the ending, was surprised by the reveals and loved the way Katrine wrapped up the characters.

This series is both indicative of modern crime novels and unique. It is smart, emotional and direct in its storytelling and plot. I appreciate the breakneck speed and the critical eye it is written in. Great stuff.

I was thrilled to learn that I'd won a Goodreads Giveaways copy of this Danish novel; my review is based on the advanced reader's edition I received. Although I have not yet read any of the other books in this series, I thought it would be right up my alley since I love a good Scandinavian noir with a female lead. Plus, I haven't read many Danish mysteries, which made this a bonus draw for me.

I typically don't mind jumping into a new-to-me series without having read all of the books in it but I did find myself wishing more than once that I'd read some of the prior books in this series. I don't think that I fully understood the relationship dynamics between Jeppe Kørner, Anette Werner, and Esther de Laurenti (and I wasn't entirely sure she was a recurring character until I read the synopses of the earlier books and saw her name) and I kept wondering what happened to Kørner that he had to take leave from the force. While some of the backstory was woven in, I felt like knowing more of what had come before would have been helpful. That is so tricky because you don't want to read a spoiler, but, I was distracted from the present story wondering about the past. Having been familiar with the characters and past events might have also helped me to digest the seemingly endless cast of characters and somewhat choppy feel of the plot. I wasn't able to understand how the recurring characters and storylines intersected until later than someone more familiar with this series might have been able to.

The crime in this novel is pretty grisly and described in more detail than some readers may be comfortable with. While you can skim over the details, they appear early on and you might miss some details that are important to the ultimate resolution of the case. I expect this with Scandinavian noir/mystery novels, but it was still a little jarring. I liked Warner as the lead detective in this story and the glimpses we got into her relationship with Kørner and how they must have worked together as partners on the force. I'm not sure if there are plans for a spin-off series, but I see some potential for that based on the ending of this one and think that would be interesting.

Many thanks to Scout Press and Goodreads Giveaways for the early peek at the final entry into this series. I hope that regular readers of this series are satisfied with how this story ends.

Solid story with a few twists and surprises, great characters, and atmosphere. Ms Engberg never disappoints.
