Great Expectations

This was really so wonderful! Another classic that I actually do get the hype about. The story is woven so perfectly together, so many themes and plot points expertly tied into one another. A great critique on class and personal responsibility in a society built on greed.

DID NOT FINISH

read for class but didn’t read every chapter, kinda skipped around
adventurous lighthearted slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

A masterpiece.

It is split into three parts the first part is sooooo boring like it could be condensed into like three chapters the second part it picks up and gets better and the third part is pretty good I just can’t get over how unnecessarily long this book feels

ALSO
the og ending feels more true to the story and what makes sense but it is very very disappointing and anticlimactic

This novel just made me want to time-travel to 1861 and fight Charles Dickens because reading this was a majestic waste of my youth.

I managed to make it fairly far into my adult life without reading Great Expectations, though I'm not sure how that happened. I'm not averse to Dickens; in fact, I always enjoy his novels (though I may not remember them with great clarity after the fact).

Though I wasn't very keen on Pip (open your eyes, kid!), he was a believable character, and I appreciated that, for once, Dickens had a protagonist who was able to transition between classes. This was the first of Dickens' work I've read since college, and I think I was much more aware of the beauty of the author's prose. It makes me want to reread his other works, perhaps Bleak House most of all. But that's a task for another day!

All in all, Great Expectations was...great? (Yeah, yeah, one of the oldest jokes in the book, I care not!)

My all time favorite book a must read Dickens is superb the storytelling and characters are phenomenal.

Eerste Dickens omfg.
