Lee Child

3.97 AVERAGE

I like Child, and this is a well thought out novel with clever plot points and strings that run through to its conclusion. But I sometimes felt Child added filling, as though he needed fifty thousand words more and poked and pinched them into place.

When the Jack Reacher movie trailer first came out, and I found out it was based on a book, I was intrigued enough to pick it up. Unfortunately, my logical brain assumed they would adapt the first book in the series, [b:Killing Floor|78129|Killing Floor (Jack Reacher, #1)|Lee Child|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347554731s/78129.jpg|4511038], and so I read the wrong book, as they took the screenplay from this book, the ninth in the series.

Anyway, while I liked that book well enough (review here), this book showed how much the author has improved since writing it, his first published book. The plot was tighter, more suspenseful, and less derivative, the action scenes flowed better, and the pacing kept me engaged for the entirety of the novel. It also made it more clear in retrospect why this book was chosen to adapt into a movie, and not the first book in the series.

Not the best in the series, but delivers as expected. If you saw the movie first, don't worry, then book is very different. The setting, the characters and many of the plot twists are different altogether. It's worth the read, but from a fan of the series, this wasn't tops.

A fun, schlocky forensics thriller novel. Predictable, but enjoyable enough. Still, this is sort of like a Steven Seagal movie; you enjoy it despite how cheesey it is.

Great book, read this in a little over one day. Better than the movie!

Fifty pages in… why does this feel so familiar? Did I read it already? (This is the one used as the basis for the Tom Cruise movie.)

I tried to savour this book because it was really that good. I don’t recall reading it before, and I note with interest that it is more than a little different than the movie with Tom Cruise. I have a few thoughts on that - TC was the wrong guy to play Reacher. Mainly because although he has the onscreen presence, he just doesn’t have the right physicality. However, Robert Duvall was 100% the right person to cast as “Gunny Cash”. Also, I was annoyed to find out they cut several characters out of the film. There was no NBC news reporter for one thing.
Goes to show that the book is always better than the book.
