My dad read me the Hermux Tantamoq books when I was a kid, and to this day I have never met another person who has even heard of them. I was reminiscing about them the other day and discovered that my library didn’t have them either, so I ordered used copies of the first three books and read the first one in a few hours. Well - it’s just as clever and adorable as ever, full of absurd outfits, incredible descriptions of food, suspense and sleuthing, and the best character names ever. Oh, and some surprisingly profound reflections on the nature of beauty. Hermux is, in many ways, a hobbit, content with the simple things of life but smarter and braver than he expects when adventure calls. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel, The Sands of Time, which was always my favorite.

I read this series as a kid and loved it. It was fun to revisit it all these years later.

I read this book for my freshman English class in 2009. I remember that it was a difficult read, pages full of adjectives and verbs I had never seen before. An eyepiece? A jaunty, checked scarf? It was all greek to me. Reading it involved a lot of ploughing through dictionary pages and googling. And probably some swearing. Seven years later I picked it up again, pleasantly surprised: It was no longer difficult for me. The language barrier was lifted. Finally there was no hardwork anymore, only reading. And I loved reading.

I remembered reading this in high school after a friend recommended it, and then I found it a few weeks ago on a clearance rack at a bookstore. It’s an easy read and Hermux is such a likable character. A simple mystery about a watchmaker who’s pulled into an exciting chain of events.

This is a fabulous series for young readers. I read them as an adult, but thoroughly enjoyed the humor and the detail put into these books. A great read alound series. The main character is Hermux Tantamoq, a watchmaker, who gets sucked into these fantastic adventures along with his lady mouse love (did I mention he is a mouse) and a plethera of other rodent type creatures. They solve mysteries and crimes and there is always a happy ending. I am looking forward to the next in the series which is to be released in October. PS Hermux has a pet ladybug named Terfle. So cute!

Cute book, but a bit tedious to read with the strange names. Some very creative world-building, too.
But the ending was a bit too pat and one of those where the surprise was one that involved a character we had barely met, of which I am not a huge fan. It feels unfair when you don’t even remember who they are because you literally only met them in one small scene of the book.
