Assholes: A Theory of Donald Trump by Aaron James

It felt a bit like the author just wanted to keep talking at times without really making much of a point, so I feel like it could have used a little more editing and a little less philosophizing. It got a little in the weeds in theory at times. But I enjoyed the bits that stayed on topic, which had a tendency to make me want to both laugh and scream in anger/frustration.

Just what kind of asshole Donald Trump is?

It should be cut and dry, isn't it?

Review to come.

This short little book is required reading for anyone trapped in this unfortunate and demoralizing political time. Trump is an "ass clown" -- no doubt about it! This explains how that is and what it means. Despite the title, this is very informative and thoughtfully written book. I definitely do recommend it ...

Nice, brief characterisation of Donald Trump. I also liked the author's explanations why some assholes are quite popular (especially politicians.)

A philosophical look at the phenomenon Donald Trump. Despite some interesting thoughts, funny segments and thought examinations of philosophical texts, this little book doesn’t feel like it has much of a point. It seems like an extended newspaper article, a little too long at times but simultaneously a short, engaging read. Didn’t blow me away sadly.

One disagreement I have with James - prudence, good manners, and rereading Rousseau will not save us.

After enjoying Aaron James' initial book about the philosophy of assholes, it seemed like I'd really be missing out to skip his long form essay about the now president-elect. Most everyone, supporters and detractors alike, think of Trump as an asshole and he fits James' definition of the term perfectly. The third chapter of the book is maybe my favorite and the best insight here is that Trump is such a huge asshole he may wake up otherwise dormant Americans to the reality we've been an asshole country for much longer than they've realized. That's about the only hope / silver lining I can see these days. It's a shame it took getting to this point for that to happen though. Ultimately, nothing too revolutionary or out-of-this-world insightful here; I felt the same about Assholes: A Theory too. Some good thoughts though and it's an entertaining, fun time straight through!

The author had already produced his "Assholes: A Theory," in 2012, so it was a good idea to use his previously done research to focus in on Mr. Trump.

There are any number of ways to think about someone like Mr. Trump and his pursuit of the presidency; this one seems no less valid than some and probably better than many.

At around 130 small format pages, it doesn't take very long to read this - it helps that it is very readable (unless of course reading about Mr. Trump causes you to close your eyes as you cringe).
