Writing is love writing is life

Read by the author, this is a wonderful inspiring collection of essays. A daunting double-dog-dare to the would-be writer. His words gentle and encouraging despite acknowledging the sometimes heartbreaking nature of the creative life. He covers a range of topics some more pertinent to me than others, but I believe there is something here for everyone.

Part of the charm of this particular work is that the author is the narrator. And he has a lovely accent. Something about his manner of speaking enhances his message (a la Neil Gaiman) or perhaps it's just sexy.

Modeled after Rilke's classic Letters to a Young Poet, this book of short chapters is chock full of advice for the aspiring writer. A lot of the advice is familiar from other books of this genre, but McCann is a sharp, engaging, often blunt writer who makes a lot of it fresh and vigorous. The writing is inspiring and motivating and makes it a worthwhile read for the fledgling writer.

[I received an advanced e-galley from Netgalley. The book is due to be released on April 4, 2017.]

Best writing advice by far. Will read this one many times.

The audiobook is fabulous. His accent is brilliant and illuminates the cadences of this book on writing. Glad this wasn’t available when I was casting about for a career, else I might have pursued fiction with greater fidelity.
