While I was unimpressed by the collection's namesake, the shorter stories were wonderful little gems. I especially enjoyed Wunderkind and A Domestic Dilemma for starters. The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, the novella for which the book is named, was truthfully unimpressive. I found it too mysterious, too vague, too nonsensical to be altogether enjoyable. The theme was heavy handed, while for many of the shorter stories it lay there in heavy, emotional undertones which I quite enjoyed.

Carson McCullers is becoming a fast favourite. The casting of characters across her short yet consistently intriguing stories cover the scopes of human feeling, thinking, being with such ground and grit. Something to chew on, spit out. Curiosity at hand, and on page.
The Ballad of the Sad Cafe is a book of short stories by Carson McCullers. I cannot get enough of her writing or her quotes. I find her so unique.
Though some stories in this collection were more interesting than others, the best part about McCullers is the way she describes people in scenarios where nothing is really happening. She is quirky, in a way, and her protagonists are always a little lonely. Her writing is dense, but her characterization is strong and amusing. I think each story was progressively better; the last two being the most poignant.
It's enthralling to feel connected to the emotions of a 1930's writer.
This book fulfills the "book of short stories" category of the 2015 Pop Sugar Ultimate Reading Challenge. http://www.popsugar.com/love/Reading-Challenge-2015-36071458

A beautiful collection of short stories. My problem with short stories, though, remains: I'm just getting into it and it ends. Highly recommended.
I do wish Goodreads had half stars because I do feel like for me this would be 3.5. The evocation of sadness in these stories suits my often-melancholy moods. In this collection, I was especially moved by the story "The Sojourner," a story of regret for time lost to indifference or distance.
