Heartwrenching stories. I don't really know anything about McCullers but it seems that she loved music. I like that.

While not on the level of the amazing Heart is a Lonely Hunter, McCullers delivers a satisfying group of stories. The title novella is a strange one. A couple of the short stories hit at the heart like an anvil. Others are "merely" entertaining. If you enjoy reading about the 1900's South, I recommend it.

Really a very good book, and very well written. Something in it, however, just failed to connect with me.

incredibly touching, poetic and tender in how raw the words land within yourself

The Ballad of the Sad Café explores themes of gender roles, isolation, loneliness, and love in small town Georgia through the lens of the unfortunate lives of the calculating and mannish Miss Amelia, the hunchbacked dwarf Cousin Lymon, and beautiful but sociopathic Marvin Macy.

It’s a fantastic little story crammed with colourful characters and lots to ponder. I zipped through it at a cracking pace, so if you’re after a quick but satisfying read, you could do far worse that this beauty. Double thumbs up.

Nice, but sometimes rather heavy-handed, and I do have my doubts about the melodrama. This seems to date more than the work of Flannery O'Connor of the soberer Eudora Welty.

Miss Amelia blijft nog lang rondspoken in je hoofd...

Read this to get some perspective on the Albee play. McCullers' writing is evocative and rich.
