I almost got Harry Potter and the sorcerers stone vibes from this. It was clearly the starter book in this world/series because a lot of it was descriptions of the world and the history of it. It dragged for a bit in the middle where i felt not much was happening but the ending definitely redeemed the book!

This is a great young adult beginner Novel. The world building is great and the Magic system is different.

This is the second time I’ve read this book, the first time was a few years ago and I love it just as much now as the first time around. The characters are so loveable and all have such distinct personalities. This writing is simple but not boring and the plot and world building are so interesting and SO MUCH FUN!! This book is easy to get lost in and a great read for second book of the year.

re-entering in my young adult era

This is now my third read-through of this series. I can't say exactly what it is that keeps me coming back other than I just love Alex as a protagonist and even though there's constant danger in this world, it's comforting to be in it.

This book is utterly insane. I love it. It is a brilliant mess of realistic friendship, impossible stuff & weird ideas but it is rather perfect. Love the library (obviously).

I really tried to get into this book. I did, but it was just not complete for me. It has promise and with a few rewrites I am sure it can be a fantastic book. Unfortunately due to formatting, plot, and underdevelopment of the characters this just wasn't an easy read.

yes.

Akarnae is a fun and unique portal fantasy that takes place in a parallel world. It blends fantasy with sci-fi in such a new and exciting way. Alex Jennings is a 16-year-old girl whose parents travel for work. When they decide to take an eight-month job with zero communication, she is left at a boarding school in the mountains of Oregon. It doesn't take long before she finds herself in a whole new world that has many exciting things to uncover.
Although the plot was unique, this story is all about the characters. Every single one is lovable in their own way, even the ones that are tough to get along with. The boarding school setting really reminded me of the feel of a Harry Potter book. The friends that Alex makes along the way really led to her growing as a person and learning what it means to love people other than her own parents. It really is a shame that this series is only available on ebook outside of Australia, because I think it would be a huge hit if it was printed in the US!
