Sherrilyn Kenyon is making a come back! Now I'll admit the last few books in the dark hunter/dream-hunter series were really boring. They lacked character growth, sexual tension and suspense. Pretty much anything that made me want to keep reading, so going into The Guardian I was a little worried. I had also resigned myself to mediocre books from now, but I am so glad that is not the case with this book.

“Yes … and you are absolutely the only single living person besides us who knows this. So if you tell anyone, I will know it and I will choke you until you … do something that makes me happy.”

Seth, a demigod has spent thousands of years under the control of Noir and his sister Azura. Every kind of torture has been done to him, bolts through his jaw, stabbed, cut, raped, clawed...you name it and he's felt it. Noir wants him to question the dream-hunter Solin and force him to reveal the location of the key that will allow Noir to basically take over Olympus. But Solin isn't talking, therefore Seth is punished severely for it until he can give Noir the answer he wants. Then Seth discovers Lydia trying to break out Solin who is also her father; noticing how protective Solin is of her, Seth decides to use that to his advantage. He captures Lydia and releases Solin, he gives him 3 days to produce the key or he'll kill his daughter.

Strange how you always remembered the pain someone gave you, but seldom the hurt you caused them first.

This is the first time since Acheron's book that the hero's back story brought tears to my eyes. I can't believe how much Seth has had to endure and how closed off his is from everyone because of it. Lydia couldn't have been more perfect for him, she has her own emotional scars and can relate to Seth's torment. They had a perfect balance of give and take and I loved watching Seth experience all these emotions he's never felt before. For the first time in his life he actually wants for something and will walk through hell for Lydia.

“Well?”
Seth despised that one word with a furious passion. It ranked right up there with eye-gouging, gutting, and castration.

There are a few things that I think would have made the book more interesting. I really wish they had kept Lydia mute for a bit longer instead of giving her a voice, it would have been great to see how she interacted with Seth and visa versa. The same goes for when Seth goes into the real world, he's been gone 4,500 years and has no idea what everything is. But his bodyguard does his mojo and gives him knowledge of most things; in my opinion it would have worked better if Lydia had to teach him everything. It would have definitely brought them closer.

She’d broken him with a single kiss.

However I still adored this book, this is what the earlier Dark-hunter/Dream-hunter books were all about. I really enjoyed this book, I just hope the next book will be just as good. Hardcore Sherrilyn Kenyon fans are going to love this book but even if you haven't heard about this series I would definitely recommend starting it.

Because in the end, this one perfect moment was worth every bit of pain he’d been dealt.

Amazing! Again, Sherrilyn Kenyon continues to write amazing stories that are all well connected for the Dark Hunter series, the only problem I foresee is that everyone is becoming human, regaining their soul, so where are the new Dark Hunters or are there going to be new ones to replace the ones who are leaving the group. Don't get me wrong I love reading their stories, their achievements, and greatest loves, but I also want to know if there are more people joining with Artemis and where is this story line going. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book far more than I had anticipated.

"La vida no consiste en estar a salvo. Consiste en recoger los pedazos que nos quedan después de que todo haya pasado y proseguir el camino. Podemos elegir ser unos cobardes, impidiendo que alguien se nos acerque y así hacer el camino solos. O podemos elegir ser valientes y dejar que alguien nos acompañe y nos ayude. No soy cobarde.

5 stars.

I am a sucker for a tortured/hardened softboy. World domination? Absolute power? No. All this man wants is a HUG. I eat that sh*t UP. I drink that milkshake.

Seth is a hilarious name for a demigod and I feel like SK really had fun with that one. That aside, he was too cute and I wanted to instinctually protect him at all costs (much like Zarek).

But I didn’t really like Lydia. I felt like, even after she learned about Seth’s abuse, she was still kind of an asshole to him. I get it, she’s not a perfect person but I wished she was more healed within herself before getting entangled with our precious softboy.

I wanted more spice, but honestly I loved the story so much that it didn’t matter. Like I said, this is my drug of choice and the story was going to be 5 stars regardless.

I will be reading the following novella though!

This is SK return to form--damaged and tortured alpha male meets sweet and sassy lady, both are impossibly powerful and the key to the universe (though about 15 books ago I could have used a flow chart on who is the most powerful in what pantheon). The ending makes no sense whatsoever but hey, whatever.

Just beautiful.

Meh, cute, but couldn't get over the fact that the female lead basically bound the 'tortured for a thousand years' male lead as his first experience of love making. Ick.
