It wasn't bad, but also didn't feel extraordinary. Missed some "juice" and solidness in some parts, but other than that, I liked it. Feels like a good book to buddy read and even do a reread. It was fun, all in all.

This was not as dark as I was anticipating. The whole reason I picked this is because of the synopsis on goodreads, which claimed it was perfect for lovers of Mark Lawrence, which wasn't the case. I found the writing wasn't very engaging, I found there was too much focus on the relationship between Marlith and Thalia, which didn't have very good development, it felt forced and rushed.

DNF when I got 6 hours left. I'm not just not invested in the story and continueing just feel tedious as this point. Not my cup of tea

I wanted to love this book. I didn’t, and the way the POV shifts in the book was the reason. The plot was good, the mythology was amazing, and the flashbacks to a life long gone pulled at my heartstrings.

Liked the grimdarkness and had some cool plot points.

Found the writing style overly crafted, annoying and difficult to follow.

Well, there’s always a first in everything.

The Court of Broken Knives is unfortunately my first 1-star-read of the year. Which is so disappointing as the premise looked so promising. I love an assassin main character, but this novel was just not for me.

My first issue is the writing style. If you know me, you know that I love a good writing style. It’s like the main connection between the novel and I. The Court of Broken Knives felt like a twelve-year-old wrote this and uploaded it to Wattpad thinking it has some sort of angst. I know the author wanted it to be grippy and fast-paced, but honestly the periods every word was just killing me. And honestly, I was even shocked that Anna Smith Spark has a PhD in English literature because this felt like the first draft. You don’t need to end every chapter with “Death! Death! Death”. This isn’t 2014 Tumblr. (Her poems were ass, too.)

Secondly, I didn’t really like the characters. Honestly, all of them were annoying to me. If this novel wasn’t my cousin’s favorite book, I would’ve DNF’ed it already.

Thirdly, the world building was horrible. I appreciated the map and everything, but I was just confused throughout the entire book. Some sections of the book really did not make sense, as the world building was so weak that you feel like you’re just reading a combination of every European countries ever.

I received this book as an e-arc from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review. When I saw this book I knew I had to read it and was so glad I got approved. I did enjoy parts of the book and will definitely read the next one, but this one was quite slow at times. The world building took awhile and for me it took a bit of time to understand exactly what was going on. Once I got into the book and figured out who Marith was I saw it going in a different direction. I liked the dragons in the story and hope to see more of them in the future. I expect that the next story won't be quite as slow since we have the world mapped out to us already. There weren't any explicit sex scenes either they were more implied which was refreshing. I would recommend this book to lovers of fighting and goriness.
