LOVED. The characters felt so real and it was so well written. I loved the different settings and alternate points of view. I learned so much from this book and thought about things in a different way. Explores prejudice, the reality of war… I would highly recommend especially if you like WWII history.

We always say if we were in a situation, we'd do the right thing. This book makes you think about what that could mean if you were German during the Nazi reign and how everything isn't black and white.

Devastating. A new take, and made me follow up with researching actual historical events/accuracy. 10/10 would recommend to historical fiction lovers.

Wow… this book really reminds you that there are 3 sides to a story. I was so torn. The only thing that stopped this being a 5 star was the ending, it felt really rushed. The characters were really well written, I cried and yelled and cried some more. It’s a very powerful story set across 3 different periods in two different families and 2 countries. I’ve read a number of holocaust stories but never one quite like this. The other side, the German side. I was so conflicted in this book. I still don’t know how I feel about these German people being able to make a new life in another country but I do know it may not be as clear cut as one thinks, and do we we really know the depths we would go to for our family. It is clear in war there are no winners ever.

The German Wife by Kelly Rimmer
A complicated story from the views of Sophie, a German woman whose husband is forced to help the Nazi’s build rockets, and Lizzie, a young woman forced to rebuild her life after the drought ruins her farm in the 1930s.
I have mixed feelings about this one, I really appreciate the unique point of views of before, during and after WWII. I don’t think I’ve read a book that showed the years leading up to Hitler gaining power and what that may have been like for families living in Berlin. I also loved Lizzie’s time on the farm. But overall I found this book hard to read. Some of it was just so heart wrenching I can’t say it was enjoyable. It was powerful and memorable, but it was also long and a bit all over the place at times. The two women were so disconnected it felt like two different books. Overall I’m glad I read it, but also glad I’m done it.
