It's hard to go wrong with Deanna Raybourn's writing.

A beautiful tale well told.

I wasn't as immediately pulled in as with her Deanna Raybourn books, but also liked the change in scenery.

The first few chapters of this book I really wanted to smack the main character. She struck me as a stuck up, thought she deserved everything, floozy!!!! She would do something that made me think she was going to be nice, and then bam, she would say something crappy again! For some reason she was all for agreeing that other women getting smacked around by their husbands were ok, or rather that she could see why some of them were done that why and even stated she would do that to them to. That really bothered me. Same of her statements about how you should let men "think they are treating you" during sex bothered me as well. I know this might have been all to prove what kind of person the character was and what they wanted her to become I just was not thrilled about it.
I will say that she did grow on me and by the end of the book I think that her thoughts about a lot of things had changed and she may have not felt the same as the things she said in the beginning. I Did really enjoy the old world of Africa that was set up and laid out for us in the book and brought before us. The Author did an amazing job of portraying how things were in that era and in that corner of the world at the time, based on all that we know. I felt like I was actually there from her world building and description. I will say that I loved her side characters more than her main couple. I wish there had been more areas with a few of them but maybe there will be more in other books.

Such a fantastic book, lots of detail into the 1920s world, and it was interesting, and I want another book now!!

Outstanding! While Delilah is certainly a flawed character with questionable morals at times, I found myself engrossed in the story, the vivid description of life in Africa and the wonderful characters that Deanna Raybourn has created. A great read for fans of Raybourn's Julia Gray novels.

Romantic and entertaining, and somehow manages to follow a story in colonial Africa without being horrifyingly offensive.

Having devoured all of Deanna Raybourn’s recent work, I have started on the stand-alone novels. I thought this couldn’t possibly be as amazing as my favorites...it’s a debut novel, after all. Well, I was wrong. It’s a beautiful book and while I wouldn’t mind more Delilah and Ryder, the conclusion is completely satisfying.

I was delighted by the main character, strong and captivating as I expect from Deanna Raybourn (Delilah and Ryder do seem like early versions of characters we meet in later books), and as usual, the witty dialogue had me flipping back a page to reread a particularly poignant scene.

I’m trying not to have any spoilers here...if you love Veronica, you’ll love Delilah.

Took me a bit to get into this one but then I didn't want to put it down. Cliched, perhaps unrealistic, but who cares? It was a fun, engaging read. I kept envisioning Catherine Zeta Jones as the lead character, and kept seeing Taylor Swift's video for "Wildest Dreams" in my head. Not a romance really, a bit of a mystery further on...not sure how to categorize this one. Don't take it too seriously.
