I really enjoyed seeing the four siblings' relationship and how "family" as a subject is treated in this book. I liked how June's and her kids' personalities are shown, how the same situation can affect them so differently and which role each of them turn out to play in their family.

I found the second half of the book a bit slower, but apart from that, this book is such a good read. Taylor is a brilliant writer.

“Must be nice. To be able to be weak. I wouldn’t know.”
This book managed to pleasantly surprise me and disappoint me at the same time. TJR is such a good writer, I had goosebumps many times while reading, simply from individual sentences. But that's the thing - I feel like the writing was so dramatic that I came to expect something quite different from the story. The story itself is lovely and - just like Daisy Jones and Evelyn Hugo - so real, but I couldn't help but want something more. But it was such a good read anyway!

Everytime I read tjr i feel like a middle aged mum but i have a soft spot for her books ngl. There's not enough historical fiction set in the XXth and not about war.

Stunning story spanning multiple generations of a family who have known love and loss.

Nina Riva deserves the world and you cannot tell me otherwise. Nina sacrifices everything for her family, losing herself in the process until her family also become her salvation.

Seemingly doomed to repeat the mistakes of her mother until she learns she can stand up for herself.

This book had me laughing and crying and having to look away feeling second hand embarrassment on multiple occasions. TJR has done it again

While this may not be the best Taylor Jenkins Reid book, it certainly was very much my time to read. Going into this, I was super skeptical. The reviews for this were not great, and they carried a similar sentiment that this was not TJR's best book. After having read Malibu Rising, definitely gave the reviews too much weight. To think I almost missed an entirely enjoyable book! *gasp* Now do I think warranted terrible reviews? No I don't, but I can understand why some folks were displeased. I just wasn't one of them.

So then why not a 5 star review? Wellll, to be honest this was a SOLID 4 star book, but it lacked that extra specialness that other TJR books have. The plot was fairly predictable, especially if addiction and/or abandonment has touched your life story. With that said, the depiction of addiction and abandonment is INTENSE, which why they are my most important trigger warnings. It very much activated my recent experiences with abandonment.

The beauty of the story is the ways in which is showcases how unhealed generational trauma can really fuck up your kids.
