Overall I thought this story flowed quite well but I definitely think that Huckleberry Finn is the superior story as it is more engaging.
I found Tom Sawyer to be annoying, manipulative and in desperate need of discipline. However, he is a strong and natural leader and quite imaginative.
It was quite an interesting look into how things were back in that time and place. The portrayal of alcohol being quite evil whereas today it is an accepted norm. The treatment of African Americans as well shows a great insight to what it was like.
I do love how this ties in with Huck Finn and there is no gap where you are left wondering what on earth happened.
*I selected this for a Reading Challenge as a book over 100 years old*

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and cannot believe it's taken me so long to read it!
I hadn't read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer so I didn't know what to expect. I thought the writing was brilliant and the characters were well formed. I loved the fact that it was written how they would have spoken, it helps to add to the realism of it all.
Considering the time it was written, it is great to see such a friendship as that between Huck and Jim. However, I did severely dislike Tom Sawyer and don't know how I will make it through that book. I know boys will be boys and children have wild imaginations but I felt that Tom Sawyer's presence just hindered the flow a little.

Tom is a likeable protagonist, and the story is well told. I reread this several times as a child, and there’s several scenes which have stuck with me over the years. Tom charging others for the privilege of doing his chores, the boys showing up at their own funeral, swapping coloured papers for a free bible, and of course the villain slowly dying of thirst inside the cave… some hilarious, some relatable, some chilling pieces of writing.
This is a classic that I'm glad I can say I read, but it wasn't a favorite of mine. I think this is one of those books I would have really enjoyed more as a kid for sure. But overall, I'm glad I read it.

I listened to the William Drufis recording, and he did a wonderful job bringing Mark Twain's work to life. His voice as narrator was whimsical and boisterous enough to well match the well exaggerated and hyperbolic prose Twain adopted to portray the mind and personality of young mischievous boys. His voices for Tom himself and for Huckleberry Finn were done well too.
The story reminded me much of The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt, due to the aforementioned exaggerated and hyperbolic adventures of adolescent boys. It was a fun and mostly lighthearted story that made me chuckle several times while listening.
I understand that the sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is a tad more serious in nature (just like Okay For Now, the sequel to The Wednesday Wars was) and I'm excited to read that soon. I really enjoyed a lot of Twain's word choice, so hopefully the prose in the sequel is similar to this one. If not, I'm sure I'll still enjoy it.
