I mainly read this so I can read the James perspective retelling. Mark twain did a good job of capturing the way a child dreams and can create a whole new alternate reality. Tom and Huck get into plenty of trouble that works out for them in the end. However this book has some pretty awful language about African and Native Americans that I find it hard to believe that people read this book to their children currently.

Listened to this with Reid and I was not sure how it would fare with an 8 year old but I think he really enjoyed it. After all it is basically a bunch of short stories about Tom getting in trouble or trying to game the system (which Reid found funny) that culminates in a treasure hunt. It doesn’t have the same amount of racial slurs as Huck Finn but does have some and it was definitely necessary to level set the time period the language.

Reid on whether or not he would run away from home like Tom does: “No. I don’t like meat, am bad at fishing and bad at recognizing berries. Plus there would be no TV and no sharky (his stuffed shark).” Also had a interesting conversation where he was talking about this book in which he used the word “incantations” like 15 times which just cracked me up. I personally thought the book was pretty entertaining but found a lot of the most exciting scenes ended anti climactically due to the writing choices. (Specifically Injun Joe’s death and escape from the cave)
