boy they LOVED their decapitations, didn't they? just loved them. the amount of times i genuinely, softly exclaimed "oh!" because someone was suddenly beheaded to make a Point was... a lot.

this was an excellent book, readable, engaging, highly detailed, somehow made it possible for me to remember who 90% of people were even if they had the same name and/or title (i'm looking at you, multiple dukes of somerset. you are my enemy). i don't often read non-fiction but i am trying to change that and this was a fantastic place to start. really good in particular at finely navigating historical controversies and disagreements around moments where we don't know the full truth or have reliable accounts.

Fascinating untangling of English history during what sounds like a very turbulent period.

My husband has lately accused me of having a "girl crush" on Alison Weir. It is true, I suppose. Weir does a great job of taking a very complicated piece of history and making it understandable and enjoyable at the same time. The list of characters seemed to grow exponentially and I have to admit, I had trouble remembering who was who and part of what family and how those families were connected, but thankfully there were a couple of charts in the back of the book to help. Overall, this was a good read- not quite as good as her book on the wives of Henry VIII, but still an engrossing read.
