A fun read that I picked up after seeing the gorgeous cover art. While it wasn't my favorite book I read this year, I still found it really cute and endearing! I would for sure recommend for people who like fairy tales and a lighthearted adventure.

my very very healthy addiction with east asian mythology retellings basically had me bound to read this.

the way axie just makes you inhale the setting and the characters with her writing is something that needs to be studied because i was hooked at the start.

but really, i didn't enjoy this as much i thought i would (or as much i should have) because reading through the story - it felt hazy? it confused me how mina could love her family so but is not actually depicted missing them or feeling substantially homesick? it felt like the characters weren't given enough build up around each other as much as i would've liked.

the plot has extreme potential and because of that i still somewhat enjoyed this!

also namgi & kirin appreciation

Be still, my beating heart!
I was mesmerized by the book from the get-go. Never had I read something so vividly beautiful and deeply drenched in the mythology of gods and goddesses, beasts and spirits. It reminded me of the magic of watching Spirited Away as a child, filling me with the same feeling of awe, wonder and hope. I feel like I could read thousands of pages of this world and never be sick of it. And how the characters grew on me and started to feel so real.
I can't recommend this book enough, if you are a sensitive soul like me who dreams of gods, spirits and love.

This book is AMAZING. It's literally perfect. There's not much else to say; I don't think I found any flaws in this book. It tells such a great, expansive story that is complete, enthralling, creative, and filled with Korean mythology and culture.*. I love it a lot. I'm glad I own this book because it's definitely worth the buy!
Spoiler * It doesn't hold back for and unnecessarily consider the white people who claim they "can't relate" to poc and non-white-centered stories.
