There is a lot going on in this retelling of a classic Korean folktale, maybe too much. Oh weaves an intricate tale but at times the packed plot interrupts the flow of Mina’s quest. The people believe the Sea God has cursed them and to appease him, a young girl is thrown into the sea as an offering. Honestly, I loved the last few chapters a lot but to get there was a bit of drudgery.

Highlights: This was such a sweet story and unique adaption of The Tale of Shim Cheong. I loved how it highlighted the strength of love and purpose. The symbolism was top notch and had me shed a tear or two.

Critiques: Overall, it felt like a short story. The world building felt over and underdone at the same time. I was able to guess the reveals too easily for my liking. I feel that if Oh had extended the book 100-200 pages, it would have been a solid 4.5 star book for me. It just felt too rushed in some places.
