Slow start to the book - a lot of context building. It was necessary to set up the scene for the second half of the book which was very intense. This is a book about the hope and community among women.

This year I’ve been trying to read more books set in different countries. This one takes place in Brazil, and has been on my kindle shelf for a while. I enjoyed the way this one flipped back and forth between the past and the present. The family saga aspect was well written and kept me wondering how it all connected. This one delved into the topics of women’s rights, violence against women, and the community women created to survive. Inês, Eugênia, Cândida, Firmina, Carmelita, Vitorina, and Alice were compelling characters. Each tried to carve out a life for themselves in a world where women weren’t supposed to have dreams or jobs outside of their house. I found myself aching for each woman as her story was slowly revealed in heartbreaking details. The setting descriptions made me feel like I was there with the characters. While the plot did hold my interest, I feel like it was overly detailed and meandered in places that stalled the story. The ending wrapped up the story well, and I liked the hopeful tone. However I would’ve liked a little more resolution for some of the other characters in the story.
