Quatre Quatuors

T.S. Eliot

4.3 AVERAGE

Moments of sublimity surrounded by loads of obscurity.

Heard a live recitation of the Four Quartets on 21 June - a wonderful event, and quite a revelation as I'd never read them and knew them only by reputation. Got a copy and have now read them, will probably reread a few times. Magical soul food.

This didn't do much for me. Maybe I'll be more into The Waste Land.

Last night at about midnight I found an audio clip on YouTube of T.S. Eliot reading his Four Quartets, so I settled into bed with the book and let it play. Into the rose garden I went, exploring time present and time past, which are both perhaps contained in time future, and time future contained in time past, listening to Eliot's voice come out of the void, into our first world.

Home is where one starts from. As we grow older
the world becomes stranger, the pattern more complicated
Of dead and living. Not the intense moment
Isolated, with no before and after,
But a lifetime burning in every moment
And not the lifetime of one man only
But of old stones that cannot be deciphered.
