The amount of sexual assault in this novel both felt like too much, and like it killed any of the impact those moment were supposed to have. If something huge and impactful  happens every other chapter, it stops holding the weight it should. I loved the prose but for that, and for the confused and unclear world building surrounding the magic of this world, I just can’t muster up the desire to continue

The problem with this book is not that it was bad. It is that I read it within a stones throw of Addie LaRue. A time traveling romance of sorts with a woman that can live forever? Unfortunately compared to my experience with Schwab's haunting tale this one did not stand up.

Things of note: I do not like how each stop in time with Bess resulted in her falling in love, and then having that love dashed. It was repetitive and there is more to a story than being in love (Jack the Ripper was happening and she was more worried about the men in her life!) And, it is a shame that this book fell back on men assaulting the main character over and over as a plot device. It gets boring and is no fun to read.

I don't know why this book has no warnings, it has explicit sexual violence and assault.
That's not the reason why I gave 3 stars though, the book is kind of meh. Throughout the story we don't feel that the antagonist as bad as the main character feels, we hear about the bad things he does, but the emotion is not there. Also, what is his motivation? Is he bad for sake of being bad? What does he do when he's not after Bess?
The time we spend on Bess past feels like a waste of time, the story is always the same: Bess is happy then Gideon shows up and she disappears again.
