I read books for the relationships and the character development, so that’s what this review is going to be about, even if the plot was packed with so many other exciting things I could discuss.

So… I feel very tender toward Magic Slays.

I like that you experience Kate’s doubts about Curran in this book. And I like that Kate’s doubts are really valid based on the way she’s grown up and what she uncovers about her family - all things that have been threaded throughout the books leading up to this one.

I like that, through Kate’s eyes, you as a reader also start to question whether Curran’s love can be trusted.

I love and hate finding out about her one-time fling and the behaviors she learned to protect herself. And how, in a new context with a new person, those once self-protective behaviors can become self-sabotaging. It’s so real.

Throughout the series Kate captures so many of the ways Curran can be dangerous. But I like that this book captures the emotional danger he poses to her, should things go wrong.

I very much like that Kate actually does process some of this stuff in the book, in a very realistic way. She never explicitly voices her fear about Curran’s intentions to him. But she does share things and I like that he extinguishes her anxiety without even knowing, just by responding the way he does. Misinterpreting her fear and revealing just what he’s willing to give up for her sake. I love characters who are willing to put all the cards on the table. It’s so hard to do in real life, so I hold him in high respect for it.

And all of this gives Kate new mental models - ways to rewire her brain and heal her attitude toward intimacy. I just love it so much. I feel like I cried through this part of the story.

After Kate has felt her way through the fear and the anxiety, I love that you see in the epilogue actually how terrifying Kate can be to Curran. It’s not just that he’s scared for her safety (although that’s there). But he’s scared of what terrible things she’s capable of - all the “fucked-up shit” she could do if she ever lost control. I also like that the epilogue answers his earlier question about why she doesn’t let go. They’re both flight risks, with equal amounts of skin in the game.

They both give as much as they get, physically and emotionally. The stakes are so clearly equal, and I feel like that’s a hard feat to accomplish when you’re writing a story from a single perspective.

Anyway, this is my quick essay on why this book (and series) is so great. It captures the messiness and beauty of real relationships and just builds and builds. I love!!!!!!!!

Fun and quick! I enjoyed the plot. And stayed up too late finishing this book all in one night.

These books are so light and breezy they’ve totally fixed my readers block

LOVE the Kate Daniels series! Nice, strong heroine, and wonderfully written characters, and the writing style is great! Definitely going on the "Favorites" shelf.

These books are great but Kate showed less evolution than I would have hoped...she actually seemed a little less mature and evolved than she did in the last book. I love these books but this one just missed the mark a little for me. I wouldn't mind a little less violence either. I mean, action is great and everything but some truly good character development would be every now and then would be really nice. Love these books, maybe it just hit me at an odd time but this one could be better. Hope there is more character development and evolution in the next one.
