Whereas the first book was quite a disappointment for me, I must say that this book arrived at me differently.

I liked the writing style better than the first volume. Story-wise, I really found myself irritated by the characters who only made things difficult for themselves by keeping everything secret. The book could have been a lot shorter if they had been a bit sweeter and more open towards each other.

I gave the first part a scant 3 stars. This part I give a 3.5.
Covers of the books I give a big 10! Especially my second volume which has a beautiful printed border.

I really enjoyed this sequel to The Miniaturist. It was quicker to get into, already knowing the world and the characters and the character development was more interesting. There are some really lovely portrayals of family relationships from different sides.

Very readable. Still no more is given away about the actual miniaturist, but the exploration of gendered and racial oppression was interesting, and I liked that it was more about family than relationships.

I did enjoy this, but not as much as the first one. I do agree with comments that it definitely wasn’t as gripping, it kind of skated along at its own pace.

I did find Thea slightly annoying, and found I was still rooting for Nella more as this went along. Definitely an interesting take on continuing the story, but it didn’t quite live up to the first one.
