Eh, this was my least favorite in the series so far. I'm all for a slow-paced mystery that isn't gory but this is a bit TOO slow-paced. And the method of killing, a mellow overdose of laudanum in wine, is not very ominous or threatening. Oooh! He fell asleep and never woke up! Help! And while when I started reading this series, I was glad the author didn't delve much into the inspector's personal life, at this point I would care for at least a bit of development on that front. He's like a robot - a lonely robot. And every single mystery so far has taken place outside of London, even though he lives and works there. Is that normal? You'd think he'd be working on at least one local case. I'm going to read the next in the series since I already checked it out from the library, but I think I will take a break from the series after that.

1912 Ben Shaw is found guilty of the murders of several elderly women and is therefore hanged.
In 1919 Mrs Shaw approaches Inspector Rutledge believing she has proof of his innocence. But he has another case to investigate, the murder of three invalided soldiers near Marling, Kent. Can he investigate both cases and determine the truth.
Another interesting and entertaining well-written historical mystery

I enjoy continuing to learn more about Ian Rutledge and this latest instalment gives us a little more of his backstory. However, I don't appreciate the abrupt ending (once again) nor all the loose threads left by the author. I'm hoping these threads get picked up in future instalments of the series.

This isn't my favorite from the series but it is a solid mystery with an intriguing ending.
