This felt really slow to me. The NYT called it “spellbinding” but I am not sure I would  characterize this book that way. It took me longer to get through it than I would have liked. There were a few days I wasn’t much compelled to pick it up. This is the first book by Makkai that I’ve read but I’m still interested in reading The Great Believers.

Is this the best book I’ve read? No so my stars aren’t for that but I had VERY fun time reading it because the style isn’t what I’m used to and it was refreshing for me in that way! I also enjoy a main character that you are able to love or hate based on your own self I didn’t feel forced to like or dislike her, agree or disagree with her. I’m not a huge fan of the ending but I can’t deny that I don’t like it because it’s accurate to reality and both things suck

I always love a good campus story. It feels like this one was marketed as a thriller when it really wasn't, more of a mystery mixed with some timely political elements. I mostly listened to this on audio, narration by Julia Whelan was excellent. I can see it maybe being a little slow in print, especially in the second part, but the audiobook moved super quickly for me. The wrap-up felt anticlimactic though, but maybe on purpose.
