Loved the setting, the podcast idea, and the twists. The main character is frustrating at times but he actions are justified mostly.
Well, I had most of a review written then Goodreads crashed sooo….

This is not in my regular genre but it was recommended by a friend. I highly enjoyed it and it kept me on the edge of my seat.
This author writes about the mundane so well. Even descriptions of walking to class were intriguing. Her takes on nostalgia were felt so true and honest as well.
I love a main character older than 30 for once.
My only qualms were that it probably could have been a bit shorter and… WHY an Israeli?? Ugh.

Graphic: Addiction, Adult/minor relationship, Body shaming, Bullying, Cancer, Child death, Death, Drug use, Emotional abuse, Sexual violence, Toxic relationship, Blood, Grief, Death of parent, Murder, Toxic friendship, Abandonment, Alcohol, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Cursing, Eating disorder, Mental illness, Misogyny, Physical abuse, Racism, Rape
Minor: Fatphobia, Racism, Sexual content, Suicidal thoughts, Violence, Islamophobia, Pandemic/Epidemic
It was a little too graphic honestly. I didn’t like revisiting the girl’s death in detail again and again; but I liked the themes of obsession and prep school.
Hm. Sometimes the books in the middle of, I didn’t love this but I didn’t hate it are harder to explain, or, you have the most to say about them, but it’s all complicated.
In a sense, I did enjoy this. I was invested, it was well written, I rlly enjoyed the other book I read by this author (the great believers). But I think there were things that could have been tightened up a bit and it would have been better. It was a very slow start, and I read a little and put it down a few times before I rlly picked it up and read a lot at once. I’m here for a slow burn and long book nearly always, but in this case, I think maybe there were a few too many smaller side plots that could have been cut and the novel would have been better for it. I would cut the Yahav stuff, and maybe the Carlotta near the end bc it just takes focus away from the main story in a way that doesn’t rlly serve it imo. I also… spoilers, kinda..
I liked the things it was saying abt true crime, online investment in it, rape culture, how easy it is to get sucked into it, how memories can be affected by trauma and time etc, but I also (both liked and didn’t) that there are no clear answers being put forth here. It’s all gray area complicated stuff. Idk. It’s almost midnight and I’m currently worried I’m getting my nieces sore throat, so I’m not being supper articulate. I liked this one, but I think it could have been better. This will stay an author I def check out their works, tho.

i wanted more resolution to the fact that this whole story was told to Mr Bloch, but then… Mr Bloch is never there? Is she writing this to him? Is this a new podcast? Is she interviewing him? Like, what’s the point of that narrative style if nothing ever comes of it? I WANTED THAT MAN TO BURN, FRANKLY.I liked the things it was saying abt true crime, online investment in it, rape culture, how easy it is to get sucked into it, how memories can be affected by trauma and time etc, but I also (both liked and didn’t) that there are no clear answers being put forth here. I liked the formatting of the podcast host using other murders to explain scenarios and how she listed possible subject. It was very long and some parts dragged in the middle, but overall enjoyable
the theory I came up with about what I thought would happen was more interesting that what actually happened in this book
Serial podcast ish, ate it up over a weekend. 4.5 since I’ve already recommended it to a few people.
