I’m not entirely sure how this got on my TBR list. It comes with a host of trigger warnings—- miscarriage, infant death, suicide, abuse, etc. Had I known that, I might not have read it. While the stories it tells are powerful and important, it also feels like a beating.

this should be required reading for everyone. i will never stop thinking about this book.
Such a great book, especially for a debut!! It captivated me from the moment I started reading it. Highly recommend
This book struck me hard and will stick with me for a long time. The gripping, illuminating, and emotional debut by Heather Marshall takes us through the evolution of reproductive rights in Canada over the course of several decades, via the intertwined narratives of three women. It was eye-opening to learn about the unspeakable cruelties of the post-war era maternity homes, and the underground abortion network of courageous, determined women who risked their lives to provide safe healthcare to those in need and fight for the right of future generations of women to be at the steering wheel of their own lives. Unfortunately poignantly relevant in today’s world, this should be required reading.
*4.5 stars*
I have so many excerpts saved from this one, but a few of my favorites are:
“It all comes down to having the right to make the choice. Every child a wanted child, every mother a willing mother.”
“And she couldn’t believe how stark the difference was between learning about this pregnancy versus her first one. She hadn’t been too concerned about her fertility, but discovered, with no small measure of surprise, that there was a razor’s edge in her life where she went from being terrified of getting pregnant to terrified of not getting pregnant.”

this book was good and def had the potential to be 5 stars (and i’m sure some people would give it a 5/5) however, the book jumped between multiple different time periods and multiple perspectives which took away from the actual story(imo). the ending also gets rushed where multiple key plot points happened within the span of like 20 pages. but overall, it was a good read!
The gasp I gusped when the major plot twist was revealed had my mouth open for a good minute or two. This book is tragic, infuriating, heartwarming, and captivating. The resiliency of women is astounding.
