A lot of interesting insights into masculinity and manliness. A little too tidy at the end, but a worthwhile read.

This book explores a lot of topics in an engaging and accessible way. To list a few:

-masculinity and violence; boxing
-(in brief) the construction of a monolithic masculinity
-the reproduction of violence and a hegemonic masculinity that must be deconstructed
-being a trans man and his (Thomas') connection with his family, partner and trainers
-community
-how Thomas navigates the world differently as a man and the assumptions made about him as a man: an assumed competence (at any given job) and rationality; how he is listened to and has noticed his increased likelihood of talking over other people (especially women), and how he is perceived by women.
-the impact of grief on his life

There is so much more and many ideas are broached and could do with further contemplation and analysis; but, overall a very compelling read.

I liked this book a lot. It was a really interesting look into the world of boxing and masculinity, which isn’t really a world I have explored before - it did take me the first few pages before I realised that this wasn’t fiction (oops) - I found some of the takeaways about gender and intersectionality’s a lil cliché and basic but very interesting nonetheless.

Beautiful, beautiful book about gender and masculinity, told with great intelligence and tenderness. I loved how the author wove in so many strands from his own journeys as well as from research about culture and gender. It was powerful to hear about his recognition of the ways he found himself reinforcing sexism as a man, despite having transitioned into that gender and having his own prior experiences of sexism to draw on.
