The storytelling in this volume has slightly improved compared to the first batch of issues. I am getting a Independence Day: Resurgence feel to it except in this case the humans are not at all unified and still playing the politics game with aliens in the looming horizon. It did answer a good number of questions addressed from the first set of issues. Will definitely continue onward in reading the next volume in the series.

I’m loving this series. There are way too many twists and turns to be able to predict anything, and the narrative keeps cutting to several different story lines as things are revealed. The drama of political entanglements balances out the drama of sci-fi interaction with extraterrestrial life really well. No one on the political side of the story is particularly likable; everyone is manipulative and self-serving. At the same time, the crew of The Clarke is filled with personalities that draw your sympathies as well as distastes, especially now that this volume has explained some of their backstories.

The way Germany was portrayed was in rather poor taste. Generally speaking, the author has a weird way of presenting alternate-reality politics with a fake Obama vs fake Bush, it feels weirdly dated. It's also annoying that this takes so much of the book vs what is happening "up there".

It will be very interesting to see where the author takes this. I am enjoying the various layers of political intrigue that is going on in this series. Can't wait to read the next one.

I was leaning towards a 3 (blah blah, shouldn't review with numbers, blah blah, it helps me categorize how I felt), but the last issue raised it toward a 4. For now, at least.
A volume mostly about escalation, i.e., when we try to counter a threat, who is going to counter our power, ended up being about who the threat was countering in the first place.
Actually, summing it up that way, I think I will actually rate this a 3, but that doesn't signify my disinterest in continuing. Rather, I think this story was a bit stretched out, and some of the alien scenes, I couldn't tell what was really happening with the action, so I waited for a word bubble to give me the skinny. I think much of this was continued setup, and again, escalating the odds from volume one of "will they or won't they?"
It turns out they will, and they did, and volume three is going to have the interesting fallout from doing so.

There’s a slight drift into cliches here which stops it being of the quality of the first volume, but it’s still very enjoyable

Oh my god, the political story has overtaken the alien story in a good way. I'm far more invested in President Blade's story than the aliens, who turned out to be a bit more generic than I hoped.
It's just getting warmed up, and I think I'm in for a treat in the third volume considering how things are going.
