Heidi

First half was good. I cared about little Heidi discovering new worlds around her, though not in control of her own life. But the second half was basically "if you're sick just go to nature" and a bunch of propaganda about praying and God. Really, the Bible was a less Christian book than this one.

The kind of book I'd have loved as a small child, I'm kind of surprised I never read it!! The sugary-sweetness and religious morality is a bit much as an adult, but still very cute. Also, am I the only one who felt bad for Peter because Heidi kept ditching him for cooler friends and then getting upset that *he* was upset? No? Just me?

Read it with my little sister and she gave it 3.5

Surely this must be one of the best children's books ever written!

4.5 stars! Wholesome vibes all round yo! This book makes me want to go and live in Switzerland in the alps, it sounds absolutely beautiful. The only critique I have is perhaps some of the translation wasn’t the best and the God stuff took me back a bit given I was reading it from a modern perspective but nonetheless it was still strangely heartfelt and this story was so heart warming and makes my heart feel very full!!

I’m certain I would’ve appreciated Heidi’s light-hearted story even more if I knew of it back when I was a child. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get over the fact that Heidi is based on a true story and yet every character (other than Heidi and perhaps Alm-Uncle) is so one-dimensional and show little growth (especially Dete).

I also wasn’t fond of the religious aspect which became exponentially present. I understand that Spyri wrote this book in 1880 and religion did play a prominent role back then but it did feel heavy-handed. This is especially true when Heidi forced Peter to learn his ABCs through some nursery rhymes which sounded more like sermons rather than something educational.

Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy learning more about Heidi’s life. I just think that it could’ve used less descriptions of the beautiful scenery and more plot/character development. I think this story would’ve greatly benefited from more background on the character’s lives prior to Heidi’s arrival. I was eager to find out more about Dete, Clara, Alm-Uncle and Grandmother’s background but there weren’t many explanations offered.

Also, because Heidi seems to be a very Anne-of-Green-Gables type of character, I would rather revisit Anne’s story rather than Heidi’s as I feel that Anne’s is more complex and she isn’t portrayed as this perfect little girl that gets everything that she wants. Although Heidi didn’t have much, she was always spoiled (therefore she was often whiny and annoying lol). All in all I did have fun while reading this story, I just wish it was slightly tweaked.

this was so so sweet ! and honestly some really good spiritual reminders throughout

I love this book sooo much I wish I read it earlier this books became soooo dear to my heart ooo my

children's books are for adults as well. It is easy and enjoyable to read.
I realized that reading these books as an adult is different in a good way. The life lessons are more prominent.
